Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D Actor J. August Richards Comes Out As Gay
‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s J. August Richard, shared his story with the whole world. The moment was indeed emotional.
Richards publicly announced his sexuality on Instagram during a live stream with Sarah Wayne Callies
Callies is his “Council Of Dads” co-star.
He talked about himself, and how he managed to play Dr. Oliver Post, from the right perspective.
If I think about why I even got involved in this industry, it was really to combat oppression. I knew how I was affected by the people of color I saw on television, or that I didn’t see on television, so this being a married, gay man, with a family … on television, I don’t take anything I do lightly, and you have an opportunity to put an image into millions of homes. I wanted that image to be honest and I wanted it to be correct.
Richards is all the way for equality, and he feels like it’s his mission to combat oppression and discrimination.
And based on what we see everyday, it’s something this world really needs.
He knows that we can’t just put labels on people based on their color, sexuality or social position, and he is trying to project this honest image for everyone to see!
While most recently known for his role in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D hardcore Whedon fans know Richards best as Charles Gunn in Angel.
Richards played the demon-hunting sidekick in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer spin-off for five seasons.
Angel was shockingly (and unjustly, if we may add) cancelled just one year after its sister show ended, leaving devoted fans wondering whether Gunn survived the apocalypse or met the same fate as Wes, Fred, and Lorne.
Gunn did appear in the comic book continuation of the series, wearing Richards’ face but sans his voice, of course.
So, fans were especially pleased when Whedon cast him in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Whedon, who created the show and wrote the pilot, is famous for casting stars from other shows.
Now, Richards’ plays Dr. Oliver Post on Council of Dads.
The Actor Is Setting Himself As A Role Model
Honestly, it required me to show up fully in a way that I don’t always when I’m working. I knew that I could not portray this gay man honestly without letting you all know that I am a gay man myself. I’ve never done that with the people that I’ve worked with.
Richards went on to say how important it is to live up to his responsibility as a role model.
That responsibility carried me to do that because I knew how important it is to other people out there like me, who would need to see that role model.
It’s always wonderful to see actors strive to live up to the standards of those who look up to them.
Season 7 of ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” premieres on May 27, which is way sooner than expected. Council of Dads returns on April 30th.
