First Lesbian Couple to Marry in Northern Ireland
On January 13th, the Northern Ireland parliament legalized same-sex marriage. This act makes it possible for the gay couples to get legally married starting with February 11th.
The first lesbian couple to get married were Sharni Edwards and Robyn Peoples. Their wedding was celebrated in the Loughshore Hotel in Carrickfergus on Tuesday, marking their 6th anniversary.
“We didn’t expect to be the first couple, it’s coincidental. Today is our six-year anniversary so we wanted to go ahead with a civil partnership but when the bill was passed it was perfect timing and it was a complete coincidence, a happy coincidence. We couldn’t be more grateful” the couple declared for The Guardian.
The stars aligned in a perfect way…
The coupled had already planned a civil partnership ceremony for February 11th. However, they surely weren’t expecting for the stars to align in such a perfect way so that they could be officially married.
They got engaged 5 years ago, in Paris, on the most famous Pont des Arts bridge. If you’re not familiar with it, this is where couples leave their special locks.
“I had got the lock engraved and we were putting it on the lock bridge and when she did that, then I was proposing”, Robyn stated for Vice.com.
When asked what they’re hoping for in the future, Robyn said, “Just like every other couple, getting a house, having kids, holidays, everything.”
We definitely hope their wishes will come true and we are sure they will have the most amazing family.
Sharny and Robyn expressed their gratitude for all the people who fought for their cause and made everything possible:
“If it wasn’t for them guys we wouldn’t be sat here right now. We just want to say thank you to everyone … everyone who has marched and signed petitions, everyone who has helped us get to this stage, we just want to say thank you”
There will surely be many same-sex marriages in Northern Ireland and we couldn’t be more happy about it. Robyn and Sharnie’s was the first and it’s an incredible moment in the country’s history. “By standing together, we’ve made history.” the couple declared in the end.
